In many countries, red underwear is as much a part of New Year's Eve as fireworks. It's said to bring luck, love and a good start to the new year. Here you'll find out where the tradition comes from and find matching styles in Bordeaux.
Where the tradition comes from
The tradition is particularly widespread in Italy and Spain, but also in parts of Latin America and Turkey. Exactly where it originated can't be said for certain. In many cultures, red stands for vitality, love and protection. Wearing something red on New Year's Eve is a way of wishing for some of that in the new year. In some places, it's said the underwear should be new or given as a gift for it to work. Whether you believe it or not: it's a lovely excuse to treat yourself.

Look 1 · Classic
Matching bralette and briefs
The simplest option is a set in the same colour. The BRIANNA bralette has no underwire and is made from organic cotton and TENCEL™ Modal. It pairs with the KAMILLA briefs in a 3-pack. Under a party dress or blouse, the set doesn't add bulk.

Look 2 · Comfortable all night
Boyshorts and top
If the party goes on late or you'd rather celebrate at home, boyshorts are a comfortable choice. Combine the BLAIRE boyshorts with the ALINA singlet top in Bordeaux. You can wear the top under a blazer or turn it into a lounge look with joggers after midnight.

Look 3 · For men
Red as an accent
We currently don't have red underwear for men. If you'd still like to join in, simply wear the red where it can be seen: for example, a roll-neck jumper in Merlot with dark jeans. Our boxers in organic cotton and TENCEL™ Modal go underneath.
Tips for New Year's Eve
- Wash once beforehand: new underwear feels softer after the first wash. Strong colours are best washed separately at first.
- Think about your outfit: Bordeaux can show through light or thin fabrics. A slip or a darker blouse solves that.
- Wear it all year: Bordeaux is a calm colour that fits nicely in your underwear drawer after New Year too.
You'll find care tips for underwear in our care guide. Which certificate applies to which item is shown in the "Production" tab of each item and on our Certificates page.
FAQ
Does the red underwear have to be new?
According to some traditions yes, according to others it should be given as a gift. There's no fixed rule. What matters is that you feel good in it.
Is Bordeaux red enough?
For the tradition, any shade of red usually counts. Bordeaux is a darker, elegant variant that's also easy to wear every day.
